About My Photography

My love of photography blossomed during a solo sightseeing trip one Sunday in Ireland in 1996. I packed a small backpack with my camera and extra rolls of film, and bought a day's bus pass from Cork to the little town of Youghal along the southeastern coast of Ireland. I arrived in the center of town, casually wandered its few streets, sat for a while near a lighthouse watching a fishing boat meander through an inlet on its way out to the sea, and then finally headed down to the strand. I walked for a while without seeing a soul and enjoyed the absolute peace of the tide. And then it happened. I had headed up a nearby hill for a wider view, and I heard something in the distance. Off to my right, about 500 yards away, was a jockey breezing his horse on the beach. I readied my camera and waited as the hoofbeats got closer, then took one shot as he passed in front of me. I watched him gallop away and marveled at what I had just witnessed, the timing of it, and my being right where I needed to be. I got the film developed the next day and I got goosebumps when I saw what I had captured. There, in my hand, was my perfect memory: the horse in mid-stride, the sun peeking through a grey sky, the ocean stretched out beyond my sight, and the grass in front of me, anchoring me there.

Since that day, my interests have evolved into an appreciation of flowers, trees, landscapes, animals, architecture, and, above all, nature’s simple sense of order. Most of my work features lines and patterns, both natural and man-made, which help me distill what I’m seeing and find harmony in the chaos of the world.

I shoot with a Nikon D300 and three Nikon lenses: an 18-200mm lens, an 80-400mm zoom lens, and a 60mm f/2.8 macro lens.

About Me

I work in fundraising and take pictures whenever I can. I had my first photography shows in 2008. My prints were on display at The Rail Stop Restaurant in The Plains, Virginia, and at The Byrne Gallery in Middleburg, Virginia. One of my images, the red lily (Nature gallery, image #7) received Honorable Mention in a contest sponsored by Photographer's Forum magazine. I also exhibited at the Waterford Foundation Photography Show in October in Waterford, Virginia.
